about

CAMOUFLAGE REPERTOIRE (2012)

Originally released on Patient Sounds in a home-dubbed edition of 50 in 2012, and then re-released in an edition of 200 remastered produbbed megaload tapes in 2017 as a double album cassette with Lux Collapsing (2012) on the b-side.

Camouflage Repertoire was recorded in my bedroom at the Briarwood House in Fort Collins, Colorado, always with a window open and a mic catching the blue jays noisy in the maple suckers. This album was intentionally “primitive” in the sense that there was no DAW involved. Just four tracks of electric guitar and pedals, field recordings, and murky dubbing experiments. A predecessor to the process that would define the Free Dust project.

The album is dedicated to and was inspired by my dear friend and collaborator, Erik Wangsvick, whose work as WRECKED was profoundly influential in pushing me to get back to basics after spending a lot of time in the weeds in DAW (this was right around the time RxRy was retired). I wanted to strip my process back. A sort of cleanse. Erik is capable of creating incredibly strange and enchantingly weird worlds using and repurposing electronics and tape and I wanted to use some of his elemental approaches to make something that felt simple but also slightly disorienting.

This album has always been, conceptually, a sort of “nature writing.” A meditation on wind and light in tall grass, rain in the window, the various cloaks of nature and their shimmering.

This album turns 10 years old this week and I am still very happy with how it works. Tapes are LONG sold out but grab the digital here.
