about

This is the 3rd installment in an ongoing collaboration between Chaz Prymek (Lake Mary) and Matthew (M.) Sage. Unlike their previous work together, largely built upon ecstatic in-person encounters and flurries of improvisation, these two 20 minute movements were composed by collaborative layering and grafting that took place through online file exchanges in March, April, and May of 2020. Arranged in equal shares, the two find their usual niches in the grove of this meadow they've come to cultivate, continuing their playing with American pastoral tropes and loosing them in fluttering New Age and spiritual Free Jazz idioms.

Both Prymek and Sage lost their beloved sheep dogs - Favorite and Phoebe respectively - to old age and health problems during these early months of the Covid-19 pandemic. Both dogs were unique, wise and sweet. Full of light. These two movements began as a collaborative act of mourning and processing that the artists shared, supporting one another and being supported in a time of candid canid grief.

Now, these two visions are presented as a two part meditation on the gravity of mourning and learning to traverse over these and similar chasms. Sometimes, the final act of nurturing can be to let someone you've loved go. That someone could be a dog, or a previous version of yourself. To end that suffering and make room for a new and profound joy that is waiting, yet undiscovered, but waiting patiently to be known.
